Hysterectomies: What You Need to Know

A Hysterectomy is a topic of concern for many women. One of the big questions is do I need hormones if the doctor left my ovaries or one ovary?

First of all, there are two types of hysterectomies: Total Abdominal Hysterectomy (TAH), where only your uterus is removed, and Total Abdominal Hysterectomy - Bilateral Salpingo Oophorectomy (TAH-BSO), where your ovaries are also removed. You want to know if you need natural hormones if your ovaries are not removed at the time of your hysterectomy? The answer is YES, it would be very helpful.

Hysterectomy is also called surgical menopause. Most of us go through menopause and peri-menopause over a period of time and the transition is gradual. For those who have had a hysterectomy, you went through menopause overnight. You didn’t get to ease into it. In a hysterectomy, a branch of the uterine artery is cut and tied off. Even if your ovaries are left, a blood supply is cut off and that yields a loss of ovarian function. Within two to five years, studies show that ovaries atrophy and eventually stop their hormone production. This usually results in the development of the 35 symptoms of menopause.

If you have already had a hysterectomy and regret it, don’t go there. We don’t look back, we only look forward! Do not worry, there are answers. Studies suggest that the use of hormones, specifically, natural progesterone, reduces symptoms. Women who use bio-identical hormones tell me they feel better, more balanced, and more energetic. We can feel that way too! You don’t want to go into what I call “MEAN-pause”.

Now, what can you do and how can you talk to your doctor? Tell your doctor you want NATURAL bio-identical hormones, not synthetics. If you cannot find a doctor that will give you bio-identical hormones, you can help yourself and use over-the-counter products. My favorites are Menopause Creme and ProHelp Creme. The ProHelp is your natural progesterone alone and the Menopause Creme is progesterone with phyto-estrogen. You can find both of these on my website. There is help for you. Don’t suffer for years! Plan ahead if you are contemplating a hysterectomy. However, take note that it is estimated that about 85% of all hysterectomies are unnecessary. ALWAYS get a second independent opinion…preferably from a naturopathic or integrative medicine physician who is less likely to believe “heal with steel” or “when in doubt, cut it out.” Knowledge is power!
