Powerhouse Foods for Preventing Prostate Cancer
It is estimated that there will be over 234,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed this year. With statistics like this, men need as many keys to prevention as they can get. Fortunately, some of the most powerful allies in the fight against this disease can be easily added to your diet.
Milk & Meat Alternatives – Two studies from Harvard University found that men were able to reduce their risk of prostate cancer by 25% - 40% by avoiding dairy products. In addition, several studies have shown a vegetarian or vegan diet to be beneficial in the fight against prostate cancer. The most recent study from the UK found that vegan men had lower levels of IGF-I, a protein known to be linked with prostate cancer.
Cruciferous Vegetables – Broccoli, cauliflower and kale all contain a potent cancer fighter called sulphoraphane. This phytochemical assists the body in eliminating surplus testerone – a known risk factor in prostate and other cancers.
Lycopene-Rich Foods – Watermelon, tomatoes and pink grapefruit are excellent sources of this powerful cancer fighter. Studies completed at Harvard show that those who regularly consumed foods containing lycopene had a 33% lower risk of prostate cancer. (See Lycopene article)
Pomegranates – Researchers at UCLA discovered that pomegranate juice was effective in reducing PSA levels in men who were treated for prostate cancer. Additional studies at the University of Wisconsin indicate that phytochemicals in the fruit are able to kill cancer cells.
Yams & Other Orange Foods - These foods are a rich source of beta – carotene – a vitamin which helps to boost the immune system. By keeping your immune system strong, you give your body the ammunition it needs to help prevent cancer.
